Saudi Arabia, Iran and nuclear weapons, Re: Riyadh will build nuclear weapons if Iran gets them, Saudi prince warns, The Guardian, June 29, 2011

Prince Turki-al-Faisal is a senior Saudi Arabian diplomat, a member of the ruling royal family and a former Saudi intelligence chief and ambassador to Washington. He just warned senior Nato intelligence officials that Saudi Arabia would build and deploy nuclear weapons of its own if Iran became a nuclear power. In order to make sure no one misunderstood, a senior official in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia’s capital) who is close to the Prince followed up on his remarks by saying “We cannot live in a situation where Iran has nuclear weapons and we don’t. Its as simple as that. If Iran develops a nuclear weapon, that will be unacceptable to us and we will have to follow suit.”

Saudi Arabia has been terribly concerned about Iran’s nuclear intentions for years and has often exhorted the United States to attack and destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities, to cut off the head of the snake as a 2008 cable put it. This is the first time the Saudi’s have publicly stated that they too will build and deploy nuclear weapons should the Iranian’s possess them however.

Make no mistake, no one in the Middle East wants Iran to possess nuclear weapons. Israel isn’t the only country threatened with attack should Iran become a nuclear power. Everyone else is too and they all know it. That’s why the Saudis aren’t the only ones who will go nuclear once the Iranians do. So will the Turks, the Egyptians, the Iraqis and the Syrians, at the least. Israel is the country in the most immediate danger in the region but other Middle Eastern countries aren’t safe either and an Iranian nuclear attack on any or all of them at some stageĀ is a virtual certainty. Look to history and religion if you think otherwise.

Why then did the Saudis make such a clear, unambiguous, public statement now? Why did Israel just hold a highly publicized cabinet meeting in its deep nuclear shelter in Jerusalem, even though it never ever speaks about its own nuclear capabilities or defenses? There can be only one answer to those questions. The Saudis and the Israelis both believe that Iran is on the verge of becoming a nuclear power…Saudi Arabia is imploring the United States one more time to attack and destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities while it still can and the Israelis are telling the world that they are going to attack soon as a matter of national survival because once Iran gets nuclear weapons there is no doubt that they will launched against Israel in an attempt to wipe the country off the map, to remove it from the face of the earth.

First.

Will the Americans listen to the Saudis and Israelis and act before its too late? Not under President Obama they won’t.

What does this mean? It means that an Israeli preemptive attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities is imminent, perhaps even with behind the scenes collusion of the Saudis and others.

Thanks Obama. You could have prevented the carnage you know. When the bombs go off in the Middle East it will be your fault.

Yours and the Iranians.
