Memo to America’s friends and allies – there are no red lines, Re: Obama Renders Red Lines Meaningless, Commentary Magazine, January 16, 2013

President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton have unambiguously and unequivocally declared that any use of chemical weapons against civilians in the Syrian civil war by Syria’s President Bashar al -Assad would be a red line for the United States and would prompt American action against his regime.

Obama and Clinton made their declarations December 3, 2012 and they have been repeated many times since.

The U.S. State Department recently concluded that chemical weapons have been used against civilians.

There is no possibility whatsoever that the Syrian President could have been unaware of Obama’s and Clinton’s declarations nor is there any possibility whatsoever that the weapons could have been used without the Syrian Presidents approval.

How has the United States responded?

With dead silence, that’s how.

What does this tell America’s enemies?

Nothing they didn’t already know unfortunately.

It tells them that any talk of red lines by the United States is totally meaningless and that condemnations and warnings have no meaning either.

It tells them that they have carte blanche to keep on carrying out whatever it is the United States supposedly objects to, despite Obama’s protestations and rhetoric.

It tells them that the United States won’t stop them from doing anything, no matter what Obama might say.

It tells them that Obama and the U.S. are paper tigers and that they have nothing to fear from either no matter what they do.

It tells them that the United States is weak and can be taken advantage of.

It tells them to go ahead.

What does this tell America’s friends and allies?

Nothing they didn’t already know unfortunately.

It tells them that any red lines set by the United States are totally meaningless and that condemnations and warnings are rhetoric and nothing more.

It tells them that the United States cannot be trusted or depended upon.

It tells them that the United States will not support or defend them and that the U.S. will back away from them in the end.

It tells them that there is nothing the United States will not allow their enemies to do.

It tells them that their fate is in their own hands and that security guarantees and treaties aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on.

It tells them they’re on their own.

Obama has rendered red lines meaningless alright, and condemnations and warnings too.

To America’s great shame.
