Reality and truth tell a far different story, Re: Stop posturing, Toronto Globe & Mail, May 8, 2014

A letter published in today’s Toronto Globe & Mail says that the Prophet Mohammed “proclaimed that man and woman, by virtue of their humanity, were the equal of each other” and that the Prophet Mohammed was a “liberator of women”.

Reality and truth tell a far different story.

Whatever Mohammed may or may not have said under Islamic law women are in no way equal to men and never have been…they aren’t now and have never been and even a cursory look at Islamic law, even a cursory reading of the Koran, even a cursory examination of the treatment of women throughout Islamic history, even a cursory look at how women are treated by men throughout the Islamic world today, reveals that to be the case. Subservient, subjugated, denigrated, controlled, at the mercy of men in all matters (including sexual matters), regarded as chattels and inferior beings, treated as chattels and inferior beings, held down, beaten down, used, abused and discarded, yes, equal, no. It simply is not possible to honestly and knowledgeably say that women and men are equal in the Islamic world or ever have been or that Mohammed was a liberator of women because women in the Islamic world do not have any real liberty and have never had any real liberty…statements to the contrary are disingenuous at best and bear no semblance to reality and truth at all. They do not hold up and cannot be held up no matter how much one tries, no matter how much one bends reality, no matter how much one bends the truth.

According to Mohammed and the Koran women are worth less than men.

According to Mohammed and the Koran women are under the charge of men and are under the guardianship of men throughout their lives, from the moment they are born to the moment they die.

According to Mohammed and the Koran women have clear, distinct, proscribed, immutable, non-negotiable roles and responsibilities and woe betide any woman who acts outside the boundaries.

Rights? Women have no substantive rights.

Men do.

Obedience and submission are the watchwords and any woman, female, who isn’t obedient and submissive may be punished in the most horrific of ways, may be murdered using the most horrific of methods.

All over the Islamic world today, in Islamic communities everywhere, women suffer in all manner of ways because according to Islamic law and custom they are seen and treated as less than men, less than human.

Throughout Islamic history, virtually since the beginning, women have suffered terribly and have been seen and treated as less than men, less than human, under Islamic law and custom.

Men and women equal to each other in the Islamic world.

What a joke that is.

And if Mohammed did proclaim that they were, either the proclamation was abrogated and is therefore not valid, or the Islamic world is ignoring it and not paying any attention to it, has been ignoring and not paying any attention to it since it was made all those many years ago.
