General McChrystal did us all a huge favor by making the statements he did in Rolling Stone criticizing President Obama and his administration’s conduct of the war in Afghanistan. They will force a public debate on Obama’s policies and leadership and the dismal results that have occurred there on his watch, a debate he cannot win no matter how much the facts on the ground are manipulated and massaged and no matter how much he tries to use McChrystal and the military as scapegoats, which he will undoubtedly attempt to do.
This is a debate that has never really taken place and which is long overdue. It is also a debate that the President most assuredly does not welcome because it means the electorate will repudiate him in this area as it has in so many others, which is the real reason he moved so quickly to muzzle General McChrystal and remove him from his post as top U.S. commander in the country.
Removing McChrystal was done for crass political purposes and had nothing to do with bringing the war to a successful conclusion. Very few things could be more cynical and self serving than that, which is also something that will be discussed as well.
